Château de Picol was built between 1890 and 1891 for the DELPONT family, originally from the south of France. The initials CD (Charles DELPONT) can still be seen above the main entrance and on a tower.
According to oral tradition, it was built by Queen Victoria's architect for her French tailor on the model of Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
This explains the architectural style of Château Picol, extremely rare for France - English Renaissance.
The château first took the name of the plot on which it was built, "Château du Pied de Picol", then Château de Picol (or sometimes Piccole, in the 1920s), to finally become Château Picol.
In the 1901 population census, Château Picol and the six people who live there appear for the first time: Charles DELPONT, Florentine AUMAITRE, (his wife), Jeanne, Charles and Hélène (their 3 children), and Charles CHEDOZEAU, the family gardener and servant.
The 1911 census shows the same owner, Charles DELPONT, and the VERDIN family, new servants at the château.
On August 9, 1923, Château Picol hosted the wedding of Robert PERRIER and Madeleine BRAULT, whose father became mayor of Lencloître in 1925.
In April 1929, Château Picol was sold at auction by Maitre HILLION, notary in Lencloître, to a new owner living in South Africa.
It then became the property of the PETIT family, who commissioned architect Madeleine URSAULT to carry out major interior refurbishments.
In 1974, the Château became the property of the VERGNAULT family.
On October 17, 2012, Château Picol changed hands to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence CLARKE, a retired Irish couple.
On April 11, 2022, Alla and Christian HUREAU, a couple of antique dealers from Normandy, became the new owners of Château Picol.
